FINAL PROJECT DESIGN

SYNOPSIS

"Infra"

A title that refers to the "unseen, under, below, hidden" emotions and thoughts that a person could have in the most painful moment in its life. A life changing moment when you realize how fragile and weak you are as a human being. A moment such as the death of a loved one. The 5 five stages of grief are the invisible steps that the person needs to take and sometimes to create them in order to deal with the strongest types of pain.

This performance's focus is to reveal the emotional states of each stage with digital projected narrative elements in order to create the ground for the audience to feel attached and moved, and be part of what is presented and exposed.

A Physical Theatre piece has been created with the hope that this experience would be a journey for everyone.

The images below are a Power Point Presentation which I presented at the biggining of the 3rd Unit to my tutor and my peers in order to explain and demonstrate the process that I followed in order to define the structure of the performance. The aim of the presentation was to make us able to create and sell our ideas with a professional form to an audience, a theatre company, a theatre production, a director etc.

The video trailer that follows is a sample of how every element will work together. It is the second part of the presentation:

STORY LINE

"Infra" is the title of my final piece for the 3rd Unit of the MA Digital Theatre. Is a physical theatre performance based on the development of the 1st and the 2nd Labs and on the narrative project that we had to present for the interim show in the 2nd Unit. All of them are linked together. 5 Stages of Grief and the importance of evolvement in life are the areas of my interest, and how the digital elements would be able to enhance the inner emotional battle that the character feels and make it visible for the audience in order to create empathy and attachement.(Catharsis)

According to the dictionary's discription INFRA means: below, beneath, under. Keywords which I used in order to define the structure of the performance and its symbolism. A physical theatre performance with the focus on the expression and the exposure of all those strong, uncontrollable and powerful emotions and thoughts in order to create a visual link between the FACT (the death of the loved one) and the character's inner reactions.

The story line is autobiographical. A woman in her 30's is facing for the first time in her life the true meanings of life and death. Her mother passed away without any notice or warning. She is now alone dealing with pain and frustration and with the unwelcome whispers from the world that surrounds her. She is in shock and denial. She is chasing a shadow of a memory, her mother's figure ,movements,  smell, gestures. She tries not to let the time make her forget. The only things that are still keeping her connected with her mother, are the sound of a music box and a package with her clothes. Clothes that still have the essence and the warmth of her body. Clothes full of memories and tenderness. She wears the dress like a skin, but she realizes the huge gap that the loss has created in her life. She is in pain and filled with anger. She removes the ''cocoon" off of her body and she eventually comes in peace with the fact, and now she creates her own steps in the world.

Set Design

The idea for the set design was the result through the continuous research in my Labs, which was to define the best structure that could embrace the Main Story. The ring on the floor represents the personal space of the character and it refers to the fact that every time that the character has to deal with a new stage of pain she is creating a new perspective but on the same path. Is a continuous loop around the centre of herself. It might have different colors and textures and obsticles everytime that she passes through the door, however, the core is the same.
